Last updated: August 2, 2026
Applies to: US employees.
Summary: Critical illness insurance is optional supplemental coverage that pays a lump-sum cash benefit directly to you if you're diagnosed with a covered serious condition. It's separate from your medical plan.
If you're diagnosed with a covered condition, this plan pays a lump sum you can use however you need. Coverage amounts:
- Employee: $10,000 · Spouse: $5,000 · Child(ren): $5,000
Covered conditions include stroke, aneurysm/benign brain tumor, cancer, chronic renal or major organ failure, coma or permanent paralysis, heart attack and heart failure, ALS, advanced Alzheimer's, MS, and Parkinson's. It's Guarantee Issue and includes reoccurrence and additional-occurrence benefits. Premiums are age-banded.
Critical illness is elected separately from your medical plan — enrolling in medical doesn't include it. For full terms, see the 2026–2027 Benefits Enrollment Guide; questions, email support@ascen.com.
