How do I create an assignment?
Last updated: July 30, 2026
Summary: An assignment is a single contractor working on a specific job, for a specific client, at a work location, at a set pay and bill rate. You can create one through the guided assignment flow (which lets you add the client, job, work location, or contractor on the fly), or set those pieces up ahead of time so creating the assignment is just a matter of selecting them.
What an assignment is
An assignment ties together everything needed for one person to start working:
who — the contractor
what — the job (role/position)
for whom — the client
where — the work location
for how much — the pay rate (what the worker earns) and the bill rate (what the client is billed)
One contractor can hold several assignments at once — the same person can be on an assignment at one client and a separate assignment at another. For more on that distinction, see What is the difference between a Contractor and an Assignment?
Two ways to create an assignment
1. Go through the assignment creation flow. You don't need to set everything up in advance — as you move through the flow you can create a new client, job, work location, or contractor inline whenever the one you need isn't already in the list.
2. Create the pieces beforehand. If you prefer, set up your clients, jobs, work locations, and contractors ahead of time. Then creating an assignment is simply picking each from a dropdown — handy when you're adding many assignments or know the details in advance.
Creating an assignment, step by step
Open the Assignments tab and click Create a New Assignment.
Select the client the assignment is for. Don't see them? Click Create a New Client.
Select the job (position). Don't see it? Click Create New Job.
Select the work location. By default the client's address is offered. Click Create New Work Location to add another (enter its name and address). For a remote role, add a work location using the contractor's address.
Review the pay and bill rates and adjust them if needed. (You can also change these later — see How do I change the bill or pay rates for an assignment.)
Set the start date.
Select the contractor. If you added them ahead of time, pick them from the list. Otherwise click Make New Contractor and enter their full name and email (phone is optional).
Choose any screenings (background checks or drug screens) the assignment requires.
Review everything on the final step and submit.
What happens next
Once submitted, the assignment goes through approval before it can go live. For timing, see How long does it take for an assignment to be approved. If you're setting up a client, job, and assignment together for the first time, Creating clients, jobs, and assignments — what's required and what can delay going live covers what's needed and what can hold things up.
