Which state should I put for getting a rate quote?
Last updated: July 30, 2026
Summary: Rates are based on where the contractor works, not where the client is located. Always set the work country; then add the state or province where it applies (a state in the US, a province in Canada). Some countries are priced at the country level and don't need a state or province. You can check our current rate with the pricing calculator.
Use the worksite location
Rates are determined by where the contractor is working, regardless of the client's location — because the employer taxes, insurance, and rules that make up a rate depend on the work location.
So when getting a quote, start with the country where the contractor will actually work, then add a region if that country uses one:
Country — the work country. Employer costs differ by country, so this is the first thing to set, and for many countries it's all that's needed.
State or province (where it applies) — some countries are priced by region: choose the state in the US, or the province in Canada. Other countries are priced at the country level and won't ask for a state or province.
Examples:
- Client in California but the contractor works in Florida → use United States → Florida. The Florida rate applies.
- A contractor working in Ontario → use Canada → Ontario. The Ontario rate applies.
- A contractor working in a country priced at the country level → just select that country; there's no state or province to set.
You set the worksite when you create the assignment (the work location). For a remote worker, the worksite is the contractor's own location.
Check the rate with the pricing calculator
To see our current rate before you create an assignment, use the pricing calculator in the platform — enter the worksite country and state or province along with the pay rate and a few other details. The rate it shows is our current, fully-burdened rate (all payroll taxes and burdens included). See How do I use the pricing calculator? for a walkthrough.
