Adjustments — types (credit vs debit), what they apply to, and where to view
Last updated: July 30, 2026
Summary: An adjustment is a one-off line item — a charge (debit) or a credit — applied on top of standard time-based billing. Each one is tied to a client or partner and, usually, to a specific invoice. You can view adjustments on an individual invoice or on the Adjustments page.
Credit vs debit
Every adjustment has a direction:
Debit — a charge. It increases what's owed: a fee or a pass-through cost added to an invoice.
Credit — a credit. It reduces what's owed: money credited back, such as a credit note.

Deposit | A client deposit | Debit |
Direct hire fee / Conversion fee | Fee when a worker is hired directly or converted off the platform | Debit |
Agency fee | An agency fee | Debit |
VMS fee | A vendor-management-system fee | Debit |
Benefit | A benefits cost | Debit |

What an adjustment applies to / relates to
Each adjustment records what it's for:
Who it's charged to (the payer) — a client or a partner.
The invoice — it's charged against a specific invoice, and can also be related to another invoice (for example, a credit that offsets an earlier charge).
The work — where relevant, it's tied to a specific assignment or contractor (and screening/expense/timesheet records behind it).
That's why the same adjustment can show up under adjustments to partners or adjustments to clients depending on who it applies to.
