Resigning or giving notice on your assignment

Last updated: September 21, 2026

Applies to: US W-2 employees, independent contractors, and Canadian T4 employees who want to end an assignment by choice. If you work outside the US and Canada, tell your in-country HR contact instead.

Summary: Give notice to the staffing partner that placed you, because they own your assignment, its schedule, and its end date. Then finish two things on your side: submit every timesheet through your last day worked, and make sure your contact details are current so your final pay and year-end tax form reach you.

Who to tell

Your staffing partner is the agency that placed you, and your assignment, schedule, duties, rates, and end date all sit with them. Resigning is a change to your assignment, so notice goes to them first, along with your intended last day. Ascen is your employer of record and handles pay, tax forms, and platform access, so we act on the end date once it reaches us. Who to contact and when has the full breakdown.

Any notice period comes from your agreement with your staffing partner or the worksite. Ascen does not set it.

Do this before your last day

  1. Submit every outstanding timesheet. Do this while the assignment is still open. Once an assignment is closed or ended, the timesheet can be harder to enter and needs our help. See Unable to submit timesheet: assignment appears closed or ended.

  2. Enter your final week as you work it rather than saving it for afterwards, so your last check is not waiting on a late entry.

  3. Check your address, phone, and email. Your year-end tax form and any final correspondence follow these. See How to update your personal information.

  4. Download anything you want on hand. Your signed agreements and tax forms stay available in the portal, so there is no rush, but you can save copies now from Where to find your documents.

Your final pay

You are owed every hour you worked. When that final payment is due depends on your state and on whether you remain available for future assignments, so the timing is not the same everywhere. Your final paycheck when an assignment ends covers it in full. Canadian T4 employees also receive a Record of Employment.

Resigning does not close you off from future work

Ending one assignment does not end your relationship with Ascen or with your staffing partner, and a Notice of Separation is a routine record rather than a mark against you. See What a Notice of Separation means. For questions about working again after an assignment ends, email separations@ascen.com or call (857) 245-9113.

If you need to stop for health or family reasons

Resigning is not always the only option. If you need time away rather than an exit, talk to your staffing partner about a leave of absence or a schedule change before you give notice. To report a single absence, see How to request sick time or report an absence.
