I forgot to clock out and my timer is still running

Last updated: August 25, 2026

Applies to: Workers whose assignment uses the in-app clock (the Start Working / Stop Working buttons). This is switched on per client, so if you type your start and end times instead, it does not apply to you.

Summary: If you forgot to clock out, the timer keeps running and the entry stays open — which is why you may not be able to stop it or edit it yourself. Email support@ascen.com with the real start time, end time, and any unpaid break, and we will close and correct the entry.

What is happening

When you clock in with Start Working, the entry stays open until it is stopped. If you leave without clocking out, the clock carries on running past the end of your shift. Once the day or the period has moved on, the open entry often cannot be stopped or edited from your side.

What to do

Email support@ascen.com as soon as you notice, and include:

  • the date of the shift;

  • the time you actually started;

  • the time you actually finished;

  • any unpaid break (start time and length);

  • the assignment name, if you have more than one.

We will stop the running timer and correct the hours to what you actually worked. Corrected hours then go through the normal approval process before they are paid.

Why it is worth reporting quickly

An open timer can leave your week showing far more hours than you worked, which can hold up approval and your pay. Reporting it the same week is much simpler than correcting it after the period has closed. If the week has already closed, still write in — see What to do if you can't enter or submit your timesheet.

Avoiding it next time

  • Clock out before you leave the worksite, in the same session you clocked in.

  • Check your timesheet at the end of each day or shift — an entry still running is easy to spot early.

  • Record unpaid breaks as you go, since they are subtracted from your total. See How to enter your time (when time entry is enabled).
