You received a separation notice but you are still working

Last updated: September 23, 2026

Applies to: US W-2 employees who received a Notice of Separation from Ascen Workforce, LLC while their assignment is still running. Independent contractors and international workers are not employed by Ascen on a W-2 basis, so they do not receive this notice at all.

Summary: The notice is generated automatically whenever an assignment is closed in our system — nobody writes it and nobody decides to send it. If you are still working, it almost always means the assignment record was closed when it should not have been. Tell us and tell your staffing Partner, the assignment gets reopened, and the notice has no effect on your employment, your pay, or your future placements.

Why it can arrive while you are still working

The notice is triggered by the state of the assignment record, not by anything anyone has concluded about you. Two causes account for nearly all of these:

  • A scheduled end date arrived. If your assignment was set up with an end date and the work carried on past it, the assignment closes on that date anyway. Extensions agreed verbally, or a contract with hours still left to run, do not move the date on their own — somebody has to update it.

  • Somebody closed it by mistake. Assignments can be ended by your staffing Partner as well as by us, and a clerical error on their side produces exactly this email.

In both cases the fix is the same, and it is quick.

What the notice does not mean

  • It is not a termination and it does not mean you were let go or did anything wrong.

  • It does not end your employment with Ascen, and it does not affect your eligibility for future assignments.

  • It does not by itself change your schedule. Your staffing Partner sets when and where you work, so if you are unsure whether to report, ask them — not the notice.

For what the notice is and why it exists at all, see What a Notice of Separation means (and why it doesn't affect future assignments).

What to do

  • Email support@ascen.com and say plainly that you are still working. Include the client or site, the date you last worked, and the date on the notice.

  • Tell your staffing Partner as well. They hold the assignment record and are usually the ones who reopen it or extend the end date, so telling both of us in parallel is faster than going in sequence.

  • Ask them to check the end date rather than just reopening it. If the date is simply wrong, it will close again next time it passes.

If you cannot enter your hours in the meantime

While the assignment record is closed you may find you cannot submit time against it, and you may see it showing as ended in your portal. Do not let the hours go — they are not lost. Follow Unable to Submit Timesheet: Assignment Appears Closed or Ended, and if the week has already closed by the time the assignment is reopened, send us the dates, clock-in and clock-out times and break times at support@ascen.com and we will enter them for you.
