When will I get my 1099-NEC?

Last updated: August 19, 2026

Applies to: US independent contractors (1099). Employees receive a W-2 instead — see When will I get my W-2 or 1099 form?

Summary: If you were paid $600 or more in a calendar year as a US independent contractor, you receive a Form 1099-NEC reporting that income, generally issued by January 31 of the following year. It's delivered in your Ascen portal with your other tax documents. Nothing was withheld from your payments — the 1099-NEC is what you use to report the income and pay your own taxes.

Who gets one

  • Individuals and most LLCs paid $600+ in the year receive a 1099-NEC.

  • Corporations (including LLCs taxed as corporations) generally do not receive one — your own books are your record.

  • Paid less than $600? You may not receive a form, but the income is still taxable — use your own records.

Official reference: Form 1099-NEC (IRS)

When and where

  • Issued by January 31 for the prior calendar year.

  • Delivered in your Ascen portal — see How do I view my tax documents (W-2s, 1099s, 1095-Cs). Depending on your delivery preferences, a copy may also be mailed to the address on file.

What to check before year-end

  • Your W-9 is current — the name/TIN on your 1099 comes straight from it. See How do I fill out my US contractor tax form (W-9)?

  • Your address is up to date — see How to update your personal information.

If something looks wrong

If the amount, name, or TIN on your 1099-NEC looks incorrect, email support@ascen.com — corrections are issued as amended forms. Ascen issues your 1099-NEC, so this goes to us rather than to your staffing partner, and you can reach us this way even after your assignment has ended.

  • Are stipends included on the W-2? (employees)
