When your Canadian assignment ends — your Record of Employment (ROE)

Summary: When your Canadian employment ends (or you have an interruption of earnings), a Record of Employment (ROE) is issued through payroll. The ROE is the document Service Canada uses to decide your Employment Insurance (EI) claim — you don't usually need a paper copy, since ROEs are filed electronically with Service Canada, but you should know it exists, when to expect it, and what to check.

What the ROE is

The Record of Employment reports your insurable hours and earnings for the employment that ended. It's the key input to an Employment Insurance (EI) claim — Service Canada uses it to determine whether you qualify and how much you receive.

When and how you get it

  • Your ROE is generated through payroll after your employment ends or your earnings are interrupted.

  • ROEs are generally filed electronically directly to Service Canada — when that happens, you don't need to submit a paper copy with your EI application; Service Canada already has it.

Between assignments

If your assignment ended but you remain available for new placements, tell your staffing partner — a new assignment may be the fastest path back to work, and your history with Ascen carries over (no full re-onboarding for a re-hire in most cases).

If something's wrong or missing
