Does Ascen sponsor work visas like H-1B, TN or OPT?

Last updated: October 28, 2026

Applies to: US W-2 employees and candidates who need, or may need, US work authorization tied to an employer. Independent contractors are not employed by Ascen, so Ascen does not act as a visa employer for them. For work outside the US, see the last section.

Summary: Ascen does not sponsor US work visas that need an employer sponsor, such as H-1B, and does not support TN or STEM OPT employment. Ascen can generally employ F-1 students on OPT or CPT until their work authorization expires, decided case by case. Everyone Ascen employs in the US must be authorized to work without Ascen sponsoring them, and completes Form I-9, which Ascen verifies through E-Verify.

Why

As your employer of record, Ascen is your legal employer, but your day-to-day work and supervision happen at the client. Several US visa categories require the sponsoring employer to supervise the work directly, set a training plan and report on the role. That split does not fit a staffing arrangement, so Ascen cannot meet those requirements and supporting them would put your status at risk.

What Ascen can and cannot support

Your status

Can Ascen employ you?

US citizen, permanent resident, or other work authorization that needs no employer sponsor

Yes

F-1 OPT (Optional Practical Training)

Generally yes, until your OPT end date. Reviewed case by case.

F-1 CPT (Curricular Practical Training)

Generally yes, until your CPT end date. Reviewed case by case.

F-1 STEM OPT (the 24-month extension)

Generally no. STEM OPT needs a training plan (Form I-983) and direct employer supervision.

TN (USMCA professional)

No

H-1B or any visa that needs Ascen to sponsor or petition for you

No

If you are on OPT and will need the STEM extension to keep working, Ascen cannot continue your employment once your regular OPT ends.

This is not immigration or legal advice. Your school's Designated School Official (DSO) or an immigration attorney can advise on your own status.

If you are on OPT or CPT

  • Tell your staffing agency before you start, with your exact OPT or CPT start and end dates, so Ascen can review the placement.

  • School reporting. Your school will ask you to report your new employer. Ascen is your employer. If you received an offer letter, you can download it from your profile in your Ascen account, and it usually covers what schools ask for (employer, start date, work location, full-time status). If you have no offer letter, or your school needs anything else such as a tax ID or a contact, email support@ascen.com with exactly what the school's form asks for.

  • Your authorization end date matters. Ascen cannot employ you past the end date on your EAD card.

If a document is flagged during onboarding

If an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) you uploaded is flagged or rejected, email support@ascen.com with your name, your staffing agency and your OPT or CPT dates. The team will review it. Do not upload the same document again repeatedly.

Working outside the US

For international employment, Ascen can support work permit and visa applications in some countries, case by case. Approval is always the destination country's decision. Ask your staffing agency or email support@ascen.com about a specific country.

Where to get help

Email support@ascen.com about Ascen employment, onboarding documents and school paperwork. Your staffing agency handles whether a particular assignment can go ahead and its start date.
