What is accident insurance?

Summary: Accident insurance is optional supplemental coverage that pays cash directly to you if you have a covered accidental injury and file a claim. It's not a substitute for major medical — it helps with the extra costs after an accident.
Accident insurance pays fixed cash benefits for 80+ covered injuries and services, so you can use the money however you need (medical bills, rent, groceries). Examples of covered benefits:
- Accidental death: $20,000
- Dismemberment: $2,000–$20,000
- Fractures / dislocations: up to $4,500
- Concussion: $150
- Emergency room or urgent care visit: $100
- Hospital admission: $1,000–$2,000
Monthly cost: employee only $3.90 · +spouse $6.21 · +child(ren) $8.81 · +family $13.27.
It's elected separately from your medical plan and has no pre-existing-condition exclusions, deductibles, or coinsurance on benefit payments.
