How long do background checks and drug tests take?
Last updated: July 30, 2026
Summary: Background checks usually take 1–3 days, and drug tests usually take 1–5 days from the day the contractor tests. The two can run at the same time.
Background check: typically 1–3 days.
Drug test: typically 1–5 days from the date the contractor takes the test.
They can run simultaneously, so ordering both doesn't necessarily add time.
These are typical ranges — a check can take longer if a record needs manual review, a court is slow to respond, or the contractor is slow to complete their part (scheduling the test, providing information). To follow progress, see Tracking background check progress — the timeline view; if one is taking longer than expected, see Why is the background check taking longer than expected? or email support@ascen.com.
