I accidentally listed myself as my own Authorized Representative. What happens now?
Last updated: October 6, 2026
Applies to: US employees (W-2).
Summary: You can't be your own authorized representative. If Section 2 has not been completed yet, change the representative to someone else in the app yourself. If it has, email support@ascen.com so we can reset your Form I-9. No one available? We can help by video call.
You can't verify your own documents, so listing yourself as the authorized representative isn't allowed. Here's the fix:
If Section 2 has not been completed yet: log in at app.ascen.com, open the Form I9 Authorized Representative step, replace your details with those of a different person (anyone you trust who isn't you, see Who can be my Authorized Representative for Form I-9?) and click Save. They receive their own secure link. Your Form I-9 does not need to be reset. See How do I change my I-9 Authorized Representative?.
If Section 2 has already been completed, or the app tells you the representative can no longer be changed: email support@ascen.com (or we may reach out to you) so we can reset your Form I-9. Then log back in and redo it with a different authorized representative.
Don't have anyone available? Let us know — we can help you complete this step through a guided video call.
Official reference: Form I-9 (USCIS).
